A hybrid of writer and performer, Leonard began his career as an actor and singer of operetta and musical theatre, studying his crafts at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts New York  and San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he received his Masters in Vocal Performance. There, he picked up skills in orchestration and conducting. During that time, he wrote songs and music for plays, finishing his first musical at age 21. He is an avid singer of jazz standards and cabaret, and has performed in Europe, New York City, and San Francisco.

He has worked as a pianist and musical director for a variety of regional shows and revues. He has also worked as a private vocal teacher and coach. His compositions range from jazz, gospel, and pop for concert, stage, and film. He has worked with the Hanna-Barbera singers, Sugo Records, and a music-sampling company that required listening and compiling thousands of albums in all genres of music. Leonard has written over 100 songs and three full-length musicals, including two with his long-time collaborator Joel Adlen, with works performed at the New York Music Theatre Festival and CAP21.
